The area was previously named Kirchheim when it was settled by German families, but was renamed Haigslea due to anti-German sentiment during the First World War. The origin of the name Haigslea is from General Douglas Haig who served in India in 1887. He was appointed as Commander-in-chief of the British Army in France during 1915-1918.
